Church Growth Spurs Proposals at Annual 'State of the Church' Report

2011 State of the Church Report from Highland Baptist Church on Vimeo.

Following several years of sustained growth at Highland, proposals to address the space needs of our congregation were offered by Joe Phelps on behalf of the ministry staff at the “State of the Church” Report on Sunday, September 18, 2011.

Called “God’s Transforming Love 2.0”, these three proposals outlined a major upcoming renovation of our building, a full-scale recreation of our communications efforts, and an addition of a third worship service and second Bible Study hour on Sunday mornings. All in attendance were invited to share written reactions to the presentation.

Future church-wide conversations will give space for these ideas to be discussed at length. A Congregational Conversation on October 16 will be oriented around the worship and Bible Study proposal, and a Church-Wide Town Hall meeting on November 6 will be led by the Facilities Needs Task Force.

Joe Phelps also celebrated the multitude of events and Love-transforming moments over the last year in the life and ministries of Highland.  Among them were the following – notable guest speakers (Amy-Jill Levine, Walter Brueggemann, Brian McLaren, Ed Shirley); the adoption of a new hymnal, new church directory, and revised church bylaws; the creation of True Colors Ministry; the hiring of David Stillwell as the Minister to Friday Church; the purchase of a new mini-bus; ministry staff leadership at the state and national level within the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship; mission trips to Morocco and New York City; local service projects around our city; the sponsorship of two Iraqi sisters to come to the United States; a vital partnership with Ridgewood Baptist Church; and the growing number of Highland members who feel called to vocational ministry.
