Mother's Day

By Joe Phelps - Posted on 06 May 2010

Mother’s Day is not a focus in our worship services at Highland.  It is, however, an occasion to speak of gratitude for mothers, and to call forth the best from the parents among us.
I’ll use my privileged newsletter space to honor my own mother, Corabelle Phelps, who taught me the stories of faith from a young age, who nurtured compassion and reverence in me.  She continues to read her Bible daily and to pray for me and others faithfully.  I am grateful that she is my mother.
As I announced on Sunday, our daughter, Kara, is expecting a child in November, making the whole institution of motherhood even more beautiful and sacred to me.  I trust that she will keep the story of faith, hope and love alive for the next generation.
May Mother’s Day remind each of us-- whether or not our mothers are living or dead, models or challenges-- that none of us entered this world on our own.  We are a part of a lineage that stretches farther than our sight.  May we live with humility and gratitude for our mothers.
